New concept, New Style, New World

Building New World supermarkets is certainly not a first for Stanley Construction. However, this store had its own set of challenges, including being built while the existing one remained open next door and facing the unforeseen challenge of unexpectedly soft ground conditions.

The building is designed to be full of light and openness – a building you can look into and look out of. Environmental sustainable features include extensive natural lighting and daylight harvesting via sensors on the lighting, thereby reducing energy consumption. Another environmentally sustainable feature includes the use of stormwater mitigation, using a rain garden to absorb rainwater at the boundary.

Stanley manufactured their pre-cast panels on site providing cost saving solutions. Innovative use of piling materials, in response to the soft-ground conditions, saved on substantial extra costs that full piling would have incurred.

Courtney Bennett, Foodstuffs’ store development manager, says: “Stanley Construction provided us with a quality supermarket despite the design and construction challenges. They didn’t compromise on their standards even though the site, geo-technically was poor.
