Mercury Bay School

‘Boat’ design makes school unique

Building a new school block featuring curved walls has provided a unique feature at Whitianga Area School.

Designed by Gisler Architects and constructed by Stanley Construction Ltd, the new block is shaped like a boat to overcome space restraints and reflect Whitianga’s coastal heritage.

The block includes five classrooms, two multi-purpose rooms, a resource room, separate girls’ and boys’ toilet blocks, two cloak bays plus an entrance and gallery area.

Stanley staff worked closely with the school to achieve a tight programme and minimize costs, without disruption to normal school activities.
