Building on top of the world

Building 2000m above sea level in a national park on the side of a live volcano is nothing out of the ordinary for the Stanley Group.

In fact, they have been completing major contracts for ski-field operator Ruapehu Alpine Lifts on Mt Ruapehu for more than 20 years.

The latest was building structures at either end of a new six seat express chair lift, plus an internal refit of the existing café building, and a new pump station to power 30 new snow-makers. Temperatures often hovered around zero at the highest building 2322m above sea level. Helicopters were used to transport concrete and lift structural steel and precast concrete panels, when weather permitted.
