Deep in the heart of Kauri Country
After the original visitor centre was largely destroyed by fire, DOC sought a replacement – one that would use what was left of the original building but go far beyond it in form and function.
Built largely of sustainable timber, the visitor centre is designed to last, with minimal impact on the environment. Rainwater is collected from mono-pitched roofs for storage and use; water is solar-heated; and recyclable waste is processed and fed through irrigation drip lines to fertilise the environs.
As a public information and education centre, the facility has an open-plan reception area, rooms for staff and visitors, a kitchen and toilets. A large sheltered outdoor deck enables groups to assemble. Wide expanses of glass – in opening doors and windows – offer a preview of their adventure.
The Kauaeranga Visitor Centre is unique – a unique structure in a unique location. Built for the environment; now of the environment.
Man will never surpass nature, but – deep in the heart of kauri country – Stanley Construction is proud to have tried.
